My Perspective on Piano Study

Students studying at the beginner level will be educated on the basics and fundamentals of piano playing. Various method books and teaching approaches will be used for instructional purposes and the books/material used will vary based upon the age of the beginner student. Students will be learn the fundamentals of music theory and piano technique which will include proper posture and hand positions, reading of notated music, and note identification, chordal harmony, and elementary improv/composition. Beginners will primarily focus on reading notated music while also secondarily learning the basics of playing by ear. More mature students will be able to do a balance of both.

Intermediate students will be given more liberty in repertoire selection as well as which “school” of music they would like to focus on primarily such as Jazz or Classical focus - although both will be emphasized in lessons at a ratio that is preferable for the student. They will also be given freedom in exploring improvisation and playing by ear and in reading notated music of their choice. Some repertoire will be selected at the guidance of the teacher but not excessively.
